Turn Down the Volume
"Turn Down the Volume" can be used in conjunction with The Case of the Barking Dogs or as a stand-alone PBL activity. In it, students face a sound pollution problem. The noise levels in a certain part of the city have continued to increase over the past 10 years, and residents are complaining--some have already moved away. What can be done?

Students participate in several activities that help them understand some basic characteristics of sound. Next, they study a map of the city and try to plan ways to reduce the neighborhood's sound pollution. The investigation ends as students submit their proposals to The NASA SCIence Files™.

These documents can help you prepare before using the online investigation in your classroom.
