What is Sound?
Directions: Use materials found in your class or home to answer the question "What is sound?" Be sure to record your observations and complete the questions for each investigation. Answer the question -> What is sound?

Materials: rubber band

Actions:

  • Have a friend stretch a rubber band between his or her hands
  • Pluck the rubber band
Questions:
Do you hear a sound?
Is the rubber band moving?
How is it moving?
What is causing the sound?

Observations:




Materials: notebook paper

Actions:

  • Place a thin strip of notebook paper between your lips. Hold it tightly with your hands on either side and be careful not to get a paper cut!
  • Blow through your lips
Questions:
Do you hear a sound?
Is the paper moving? How is it moving?
What is causing the sound? Observations:




Materials: balloon

Actions:

  • Blow up the balloon – don't let it pop!
  • Pinch the neck of the balloon tightly to keep the air in.
  • Stretch the neck of the balloon by pulling on each side.
  • Let the air out slowly.
Questions:
What does it sound like?
What is moving or vibrating?

Observations:




Materials: tuning fork, foam ball, string, pushpin

Action Step 1:

  • Strike a tuning fork with your pencil
Questions:
Is the tuning fork moving? How do you know?

Observations:




Action Step 2:

  • Tie a piece of string onto a pushpin.
  • Insert the push-pin into the foam ball until it is secure.
  • Hold the end of the string and let foam ball hang in the air.
  • Strike a tuning fork and move it close to the foam ball on the string.
Questions:
What happens to the foam ball? Can you explain?
