The NASA SCIence Files™
All You Do is Train
Purpose: To understand how people train to maintain life in harsh or different environments

Materials

Procedure
  1. In your group, brainstorm a list of different environments found on Earth that would be harsh and the most differen from the one you live in. For example, the South Pole, the Sahara Desert, underwater, and so on.
  2. Discuss how you would prepare yourself to live in one of those environments.
  3. Use reference books and the Internet to research more information about that environment and how people have trained to live there in the past.
  4. Discuss and create a training plan with a timeline to prepare others to go and live in that environment.
  5. Share your plan with your class and ask for suggestions.
Extension
  1. Invite a firefighter or police officer from your local community to speak with the class about how they train to work in their environments.
  2. Write a report on how people train to visit and live in hostile environments.
  3. Research how astronauts train to work and live in space.
