Modeled to a Fault
Purpose: To build a model of three types of faults

Materials

Procedure

Teacher Note: For ease of assembling, enlarge the fault patterns

  1. Cut along the outer edges of the pattern for the normal fault.
  2. Fold along the solid straight lines within in the pattern, folding so that the printed side faces outwards. Do not fold along the line that represents the fractures and has arrows.
  3. Using the normal fault diagram 1, place a small amount of glue on the tabs indicated.
  4. Assemble the models as shown in diagram 2.
  5. Repeat 1-4 for the reverse fault (diagrams 3 and 4) and the strike-slip fault (diagrams 5, 6, and 7).

Conclusion

  1. Describe how the faults are similar and how they are different.
  2. Using Internet, book, and other resources, research each type of fault and create a written report, poster, or some other type of presentation for your class.
