| Stop that Germ! |
Purpose: To understand how infectious diseases spread
Background
Germs are everywhere. You can’t always see them, but they are everywhere. Because we can’t always see germs, it is very important to always wash our hands and be conscious of putting things in our mouths or eating and drinking after others.
Materials
- small block of wood
- glitter (different color for each group)
- glue
- warm water
- soap
- paper towel
- science journal
Procedure
- Make a list of all the things you know about germs and discuss with your group.
- Brainstorm reason why it is so important to wash your hands before eating and after using the restroom.
- Smear the block of wood with glue and sprinkle glitter all over the glue.
- Pass the block around your group letting each person hold it briefly.
- Pass the block to other groups and/or your teacher.
- Return to your group and make note of the various colors of glitter each person has on his or her hands. Record in your science journal.
- Take a paper towel and wipe the block of wood.
- Observe the block of wood and the paper towel. Record your observations.
- Wash the block with warm water and soap.
- Observe the block and record your observations.
- Wash your hands.
Conclusion
- What happened when you passed the block of wood around the group? the class? Why?
- What happened when wiped the block with the paper towel? With the soap and water?
- Explain why it is necessary to wash your hands before eating and after using the restroom.
Extension
Lightly brush one hand with cooking oil. Then place chalk dust on that hand. Wash your hand in cold water. See if all the oil comes off. Then use hot water.
