Martin Waszak Martin Waszak
Born Dec. 9, 1958 in Chicago, IL

Education: B.S. and M.S. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering

Favorite School Subjects: Mathematics, Science

Favorite Teacher: Ron Partyka (High School Science). Mr. Partyka challenged me to go beyond the textbook and see that science is a creative process, not just a bunch of facts and figures.

What do you do? I research ways to control aircraft that would not be able to fly due to adverse conditions or damage. I accomplish this by building mathematical models of the aircraft and applying control theory to devise control systems that exceed the capabilities of human pilots.

What is the best thing about your job? I get to think up problems to solve and then solve them. In a way I'm my own boss, and I get to work on stuff that I enjoy. I look forward to coming to work every day (well, almost every day).

How do you "kick start" your creativity? I try to approach problems from many perspectives and seek input from a lot of people. I start by reflecting on what I know about a subject, try to learn how other people have approached similar or related problems through research, and ask my friends and colleagues what they think.

What are the two most important lessons any young person might learn from the way you live your life? Never say "no" to an interesting opportunity, even if it messes up your plans. Some of my best experiences have come from taking chances and being spontaneous.
